How eukaryotic cells evolved:

Through serial endosymbiosis, the mycoplasma host bacterium merged with the bdellovibrio bacterium (which is called "aerobic bacteria" in the graphic on the left) to form the first eukaryotic (with distinct nuclei) cell. (See Lynn Margulis, the main proponent of the Endosymbiosis theory.)
